This should work:

    trap 'return $?' ZERR

Or if you want to get fancier:

    [[ -o interactive ]] && trap 'return $?' ZERR || set -e

To remove the trap automatically (very recent zsh versions only):

    trap '(){ trap - ZERR; return $1 } $?' ZERR
