How about
script () {
export INSCRIPT
(( INSCRIPT ++ ))
command script "$@"
(( INSCRIPT -- ))
}
then when you set your prompt, test to see if $INSCRIPT is > 0.
There's no portable way to find the parent's process name, as far as I
know.
