It's more a problem of subshell.

( jobs )
doesn't work.

Note that you can get the number of jobs with ${#jobtexts}

Here is my PS1:
PS1='%(?..%B(%?%)%b)%m:%50<..<%~${jobtexts:+"[${#jobtexts}]"}%(#.#.$) '
