Sounds like a job for history-expansion:

zsh% cp fredjoesid.php danjoesid.php
zsh% !:0-1 !:1:s^fred^donny
cp fredjoesid.php donnyjoesid.php
zsh% print -l *.php
danjoesid.php
donnyjoesid.php
fredjoesid.php
