* GLOB not listing all files?

when I do

% ls

I get one list of files, but that is different from when I do

% ls *

In particular, only files that are smaller than about 4GB are shown. This is
on AIX.

I have never had this problem before.

It might be the shell is not being compiled with large file support,
This happens by default on most systems, but AIX is a bit weird.  I may
have been using AIX when I was playing around with this, but I don't
have access any more.
