Try setting
  TRAPALRM() { print "Someone sent me an alarm signal"; }
which should at least tell you if the the shell thinks it's getting a
timeout (and stop it).  This is the mechanism that TMOUT uses:  if it goes
on merrily as before, it must be something else.
