The above works for me, or appears to:
% autoload compinit
% compinit -D
% zstyle ':completion:*:*:*:*' matcher 'r:|=* l:|=*'
% git checkout rg<TAB>
% git checkout arg<TAB>
recent branches
zargs-2.0 -- zargs-2.0 - use zsh/param/private and naming to hide internal
local head
zargs-2.0
commit tag
post-opt-arg pre-opt-arg
Have you tried invoking _complete_debug ?
