You've read 'the cathedral and the bazaar' of course.  If I were a gazilionaire I'd pay some hotshots to rewrite the whole thing from the bedrock up -- build a cathedral.  Same with zsh -- pay the devs to really get things right.  Think Haussmann redoing Paris.
