* canceling completion?

(using the basic completion system in zsh 4.2.0) i often find that
completing named dirs takes an unacceptable amount of time (presumably
due to NIS lookups). unlike bash, i don't seem to be able to C-c the
completion--in fact i have to kill 9 the shell if i want out early. is
there a better way to handle this?
