Checked that in ksh:
% a=""; echo ${a//*/x}
x
% a=( "" ); echo ${a[@]//*/x}
x
% [[ "" = * ]] && echo yes
yes
It can look like // behavior was bash-driven, and in bash there is the omission for "".
