The only difference I see is this (I have double-quotes around "$i"):

       _mbox_cache=( "${_mbox_cache[@]}" "$i"/*(.) )
-      dirboxes=( $dirboxes $i/*(/) )
+      dirboxes=( $dirboxes "$i"/*(/) )
     fi

I think text/plain is fine.
