Or fall back to _POSIX_PATH_MAX (if system supports pathconf(), it rorbably
suports it as well):

PATH_MAX
Maximum number of bytes in a pathname, including the terminating null
character. Minimum Acceptable Value: _POSIX_PATH_MAX
