This is working for me in current zsh revision pulled from git:

torch% zstyle ':vcs_info:*' nvcsformats "%~" ""
torch% PS1='[%n] ${vcs_info_msg_0_}%# '
[schaefer] ~% cd zsh-5.0
[schaefer] (cvs)-[zsh/zsh-5.0]-% cd /tmp
[schaefer] /tmp%
I didn't try on MacOS, though.
