I tried:

  zstyle -e ':completion:*:*:foo:*' file-patterns \
      'reply=( "*.h:header:header" )'

and (from that old message, only slightly changed):

  zstyle -e ':completion:*:*:foo:*' file-patterns \
      '[[ $PREFIX == /usr/[^/]# ]] && reply=( "*(@)" )'

And it both works without problems for me.
