Hm.  That's pretty obviously broken.  But I think this is right:

    if ((UID == EUID )); then
      getent group $LOGNAME | IFS=: read GROUP _i_pw _i_gid GROUPMEM
    else
      getent group $EGID | IFS=: read GROUP _i_pw _i_gid GROUPMEM
    fi

Much quicker.  :)
