Here is a simple test that shows the error in the old version:

% compdef '_multi_parts -- / mpcompletions' mptest
% mpcompletions=( a/foo\) a/f123 )
% mptest a/<TAB>
_multi_parts:147: bad pattern: (foo)|f123)*
