I did test it. In the cases of
% echo =<TAB>
% echo \=<TAB>
% echo ~<TAB>
% echo \~<TAB>
% echo =a<TAB>
% echo \=a<TAB>
% echo ~a<TAB>
% echo \~a<TAB>
it gave correct results. Under what circumstances do you think it will
fail?
