Here are the three current choices --- not quite final, but definitely
getting there. Looks like variant 3 is our favourite at the moment.

I didn't know zsh had a logo of any kind so I had to find it. Here it
is: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zsh-users/zsh/master/Src/zsh.ico.
I don't think I've seen this anywhere before. Reverse google search
doesn't know it either.

All three looks very nice. It took me a while to figure out how they
are different. With glasses on I like variant 3 best: rounded corners
and closer lettering is quite elegant. Without glasses I don't like it
as much: there is a weird optical effect where the last letter looks
shorter than the others and appears truncated. The two variants don't
give me that feeling despite similar design. This is a super minor
thing for sure.

Roman.

It's not a weird optical effect, the H actually is a few pixels
shorter than the S! The graphic artist is fixing that.

They look great, and really clearly evoke a shell. I assume that the color
version, with black and orange, is a callback to Paul's Princeton days?

My only comment is that the way the "H" blends in to the terminal border strains
my brain a bit. My eye keeps getting drawn to it, and it's dissonant every
time. I think that would go away with just a slight break -- even less than the
one between the border and the "Z" would probably do it. Or maybe having the
"Z" connected as well would solve it.

But please ignore me if it's not an issue for anyone else; I don't want to be a
bother. And really, the design is awesome; I wasn't expecting something nearly
as perfect as what I saw when I opened up the image.

I will point out that v1 really looks more like a DOS prompt to me, with the ">"
character, even if it's missing the "C:". :)

Thanks,
Danek

I like the rounded edges of v3, but I like the apparent space after the
prompt character of v2.  I also agree that a little separation between
the upright of the H and the edge of the box would be good.

Just my 2¢

I do prefer '%'. It seems more zsh-esque to me, while '>' is a bit
generic.

Never visited the www.zsh.org website with a browser which shows
favicons in the tab like e.g. Firefox or Chrome/Chromium?

Huh? Never saw that one. For me, https://www.zsh.org/favicon.ico
was always "the Zsh logo". We also used for the Zsh packaging repo in
Debian's Gitlab: https://salsa.debian.org/debian/zsh

(But I'm happy to replace that badly upscaled one in Debian's Gitlab
with the new logo once it has been decided on. :-)

Same here, #3 is clearly my favourite, mostly because the frame has
rounded corners and since the H is part of it, the font needs rounded
corners as well. And I prefer the zsh-typical % as identifier.

I'm partial to 2. Terminals should use monospace fonts and 3 feels more
comic sans than monospace. 1 is least preferred.

The rest of this may be too nit picky. The bar in the percent sign is
quite flat and the thickness of the circles relative to the bar is odd.
It may be nice to have a thin cut above the H, so it reads at a glance
as an H, but that would only work for v2 not v3.

FWIW if not to be to nit picky myself, why '%'? Historically '%' was the
default
csh prompt. Whereas '$' was the Bourne shell default for users. '>' was
the
default secondary prompt(not just a dos prompt). Zsh is more Bourne then
csh.
In reality prompt can be set to almost anything.

I also feel that there should be a break between the right vertical bar
and the "H".
If 'Z' and 'H'(V3) are going to be rounded shouldn't 'S' be rounded too?

As far as the overall design, very nice. Nice work.

Just my $0.02,

Jim

I guess if we're picking nits I might as well jump in.. :-)

Of course, personally I use '|', but given the zsh default is '%',
that seems like the right choice here.

> I also feel that there should be a break between the right vertical bar

Agreed, I think that would look better, either square or rounded to
match V1/V2/V3.

> If 'Z' and 'H'(V3) are going to be rounded shouldn't 'S' be rounded too?

I hadn't noticed that, good catch!

A few additional nits:

reduce excess space between the letters in V1/V2

in all three the "S" is a few pixels too tall (at the top; baseline is
right)

the "H" looks much too narrow to me in all three, but that seems to be
mostly an optical illusion, as it is the same width as the 'S', though
both are narrower than the 'Z' (I only looked closely at V3).
Possibly adding a break between the top right of the 'H' and the right
vertical bar as suggested above will help?

I agree with Matthew that the bar in the percent sign should be at a
steeper angle, and comparable thickness to the circles.

already mentioned above, but a little more space needed between '%'
and '_' in V1/V3; V2 is good.

> As far as the overall design, very nice. Nice work.

Yes, they really look great!

Greg

I agree the > is kind of generic, so i like both v2 and v3. My comments on
those:

* As mentioned, it seems inconsistent that the tips of the S in v3 aren't
  rounded like everything else

* I guess the cursor line matches the thickness of the line in the %, but it
seems so thin that it could disappear at smaller sizes

* Maybe consider a variant for *really* small sizes, like 16x16 — i don't
think it will scale down well as-is. Probably just the %_ or the ZSH or the
terminal outline by itself would work

dana

Those links have various variations of a "Z" with circles on the start
and end of the glyph.

So far we have two ideas (the stylized "Z" from 2019 and the
miniature-of-a-shell-window from the parent post). I'm sure that
entirely different ideas are possible, too; so, if anyone's got ideas,
we're all ears.

at the same time, I'd like it to be clear that anyone who has an idea
for a logo is welcome to (UK)table it and have it considered.

The first unix shell, the thompson shell used %; the PWB/Mashey shell also used %,
a few others including csh used %. bourne was the one that arbitrarily used $ and
i doubt much thought was put into it.

Since i am here though, i like v3 even more so with a monospace font.
