Handling of German special characters (umlauts and 'ß') is still buggy
on Linux (unpatched 3.1.5 version).
print 'mäh'
from the terminal works OK, but
print "mäh"
gives $PS2 on the next line. Entering " then produces the message
zsh: command not found: h\n
Within a script, the command works as expected. I tried the same on AIX,
no such bugs there.

(=E4 is u-umlaut, I haven't fixed up quoted-printables in quotations.)
Try zsh-workers/4612. It's specific to machines where char is signed.
