exporting most shell variables commonly used among shells result in that kind of weirdness.

another one people (mis)commonly export is PS1. i don't think adding such an warning to each
variable would yield much of a result when people seem to think that using export is required
to set variables, ignorant of the differences in environment variables and shell variables.
