This is the main package manager for PHP. I'm generally happy with the
functionality, but i feel like i implemented a few things weirdly, so if anyone
has any better ideas i'd appreciate it:

* Composer supports global options both before and after sub-commands, and i
wanted to make sure that the 'state' of used global options carried over to
  the sub-command completion, hence __composer_prune_global_opts

* Like git, make, &c., Composer lets you set the working directory via a
command-line option, and since it can appear anywhere as mentioned above i
needed to handle that, hence __composer_update_work_dir

* Perhaps most questionable is __composer_packages. I couldn't figure out how
to reliably complete arbitrary package names, because Composer is incredibly
slow to return them, and there are so many that it didn't perform much better
when i tried the usual array-caching mechanism. Even asking Composer about
packages listed in the project JSON files is pretty slow, and not always
accurate. To work around those problems i 'seeded' the function with a bunch
of the most popular packages, and then i used `grep -o` to 'parse' the names
out of the JSON files. Hard-coding package names in feels especially weird,
  but...?

Sorry in advance to anyone who actually combs through this

dana

+#compdef composer composer.phar
+
+# Notes:
+# - With some re-arranging, this function could be used as a base for completing
+# any Symfony Console application. It's worth mentioning that most Console
+# applications provide their help output in structured XML and JSON formats,
+# and a helper function could be written to parse these and produce basic
+# completion similar to what `_arguments --` does. But it wouldn't be fully
+# featured like this
+# - @todo As mentioned below, we don't offer full completion for arbitrary
+# package names; see __composer_packages for details
+# - @todo We don't complete custom commands (including script aliases). This is
+# easy to do in the general case, but it probably requires some clever caching
+# to avoid introducing a noticeable lag to every completion operation, due to
+# the way command resolution works and the fact that discovering custom
+# commands requires making slow calls to Composer
+# - @todo We don't complete version constraints

(And sorry for the fullquote. I thought I'd trimmed it.)

Yeah, that's what i meant by 'array-caching mechanism'.

I'd used that for opkg, but when i tried it here i found that the completion
system struggles when there are hundreds of thousands of possibilities; unless
you already have several characters on the line to narrow the list down, the
shell just hangs. That didn't seem like something i should put people through.

Looking at how APT packages are handled, though, i guess it's actually kind of
the same situation there — so maybe i'm overly worried about it?

Hard-coded packages felt too questionable, and i couldn't think of anything
else that would be intuitive to people, so i just made it fetch them all by
default again, with an option to use only the local data

In cases like this where there are many thousands of possibilities, and you try
to complete when there's no prefix/suffix yet on the command line, completion
hangs for ages (several minutes here) on the loop in _multi_parts. I didn't
look very hard but i think maybe this could be improved if the empty argument
were treated as a special case? Even then, though, i's still effectively
unusable if you add too many possibilities at once; e.g.:

  _foo() { compadd -2V test - foobarbaz{1..100000} }
  compdef _foo foo
  foo <TAB>

(That's the _deb_packages behaviour i mentioned)

+# featured like this
+# - Completing arbitrary package names from Packagist, even with caching enabled
+# (which it is by default here), can be very slow; it may even hang the shell.
+# To disable the fetching of remote packages and use only local cache/JSON
+# information for completion, set the fetch-packages style as follows:
+# zstyle ':completion:*:composer:*' fetch-packages no
+# - @todo We don't complete custom commands (including script aliases). This is
+# easy to do in the general case, but it probably requires some clever caching
+# to avoid introducing a noticeable lag to every completion operation, due to
+# the way command resolution works and the fact that discovering custom
+# commands requires making slow calls to Composer

Mikael pointed out that i'm probably using menu selection, and i am. Really
should have mentioned that. I don't know how to judge the usability of the

Maybe compadd itself should throw an error if there are "too many"

something lower-level, since compadd itself doesn't know about duplicates,
&c.) to just stop adding matches after a certain point?
