I haven't used AIX since I left my old job last August and that was AIX
3.2 on old pre-PowerPC hardware so I probably can't be much help. The
main thing I should point out though is that I don't think it should be
building a libzsh-..so - it should be able to stick that all in the zsh
binary. At least if I remember correctly that was how it always was but
I may be wrong. I'd be suprised if that has changed in 4.3 because my
3.2 compiled binaries used to work on AIX 4.2 (we had a couple of 4.2
machines which didn't have a C compiler).
The arguments to the link don't look very familiar - I don't recognise
-bexpall and I don't like the look of the strip (-s) flag when linking a
shared library. The warning about the entry point makes me suspicious
that it is trying to link the library as a binary not as a shared
library. Make sure you don't have the any environment variables like
CFLAGS, LDFLAGS etc set (or $CC including arguments) or if any of these
are set from a config.site script. Try a clean build and we might then
be able to work something out by looking through config.log and similar
files.
Basically, my guess is that something has gone wrong in one of the
configure tests. Did you have any of the previous 3.1.X versions working
with dynamic linking?

Is this the [[ -N ... ]] test - it often fails when run on an NFS
mounted partition. There are also a few expected failures if you run the
tests as root.

-s is O.K. - we explicitly check if it is safe to strip shared libraries. Of
course, test may get it wrong anyway ...
My guess is that AIX 4.3 has dl* functions and hence AIXDYNAMIC is not used.
But something goes wrong with dlopen() & Co.
Post config.log here, generated config.h and exact configure invocation
here. Remove config.cache before running configure - else confg.log will be
pretty useless.
I vaguelly remember something about AIX and dlopen. Should be in archives.

DLLDFLAGS='-G -bexpall'
as well. We provide -lc in any case.

That is very bad. It most probably means, we still need export files but
they are not created while we think we are on "normal" OS and not on AIX :-0
If it is the case, it may be fixed - unfotunately, we need to know the
format of exports file.
Please, give it a try - create export file for zsh and add it to rlimits,
like:
add ``-bE:zsh.export'' to libzsh flags
add ``-bI:../zsh.export'' to rlimits.so flags (ajust path as appropriate)
try to compile
And as long as you are the only person who has access to AIX - could you
check compiler docs how to generate shared library on your version of AIX?

That sounds quite plausible. I expect that it has retained the old calls
though so it might be a good idea to make it use AIXDYNAMIC on AIX even
if the dl* functions are found. What might be worth trying is to use a
contrived config.cache which indicates that the dl* functions are not
there.

Something like this? We already fiddle way too much with cache variables.
To Timo, Timothy - could you test it? If you are not building off CVS you
have to patch configure.in. Stock 4.0.1 won't work with autoconf-2.50; CVS
version will.

There's no zshconfig.ac in the zsh-4.0.1 source I have so I presume that's
what you meant about needing to patch configure.in directly. However, I was
unsure about what was meant about autoconf (the currently installed version
is either 2.14.1 or 2.13), so I patched configure directly (substituting
AC_DEFINE and dnl the way they were done in configure). On doing plain
configure (which uses gcc), it compiles ok up until:

2.14.1 never existed; there are 2.13 or 2.50; anything in between is
development version that was never officially released. You can just use
2.13 after patching configure.in.

Have you removed config.cache after creating new configure? AIX should not
build libzsh.so; it is hardcoded and does not depend on compiler.

- make clean source tree
- apply the patch and run autoconf-2.13 as above;
- run configure; make
- send config.log, config.h, config.cache and conifg.modules.
Probably, typescript of make does not harm. You may send them directly to
me so as to not clutter list.

There is something fishy here. We have

preset AIX values including DLLDFLAGS=""
else
...

aix ) DLLDFLAGS="-G -bexportall ..."
But the second branch is never executed for AIX. Anybody remembers what's
going on here? What DLLDFLAGS are needed on AIX? Oliver, what have you
used?

It is still trying to link a libzsh so I suspect that the
zsh_SYS_DYNAMIC_EXECSYMS test is going wrong, possibly because the test
it does is trying to use the dl* functions. Timothy: could you please
try changing the `L=L' line somewhere in configure to `L=N'. Keep
Andrej's patch in and then try another build (after a `make distclean'
or whatever to clean things up).

I never tried it. The AIX machines were on an isolated network so I'd
have had to split gcc across a pile of floppies to get it over which I
never felt inclined to do. What I can tell you is that gcc would not
support the same options as the native compiler. For example, I expect
that to achieve the -L option which Timothy described in 14825, it would
need something like -Wl,-rpath,/cs/lib/zsh.

I wish I could remember that. I don't particularly recognise "-G
-bexportall". You can try looking through the ld documentation which is
at
http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/doc_link/en_US/a_doc_lib/cmds/aixcmds3/ld.htm
but they don't seem to have the compiler's documentation there.

Doesn't work here with 2.8.1..
P.S. now I've discovered another problem with AIX; static zsh doesn't
display 8-bit characters correctly if zpty is configured link=static to
the default config.modules. Also "ls" etc. that print to the terminal are
broken:
