I'm using the Vita Nuova Plan 9 CD, dated August 2000. I prepared the
floppy from the CD by running RAWRITE under Windoze 98, and made no
changes to the default configuration on the floppy. In the past, when I
have changed the monitor settings (by trying svga, vga, with various
sizes) I have found that either I get the same problem, or see no
display at all (which I assume is caused by either exceeding the card's
capabilities, or hitting a mode not supported by my monitor).

The card is labelled:
PN 109-32100-20 FCC ID EXM 321 (c) 1995 ATI Technologies Ltd.

The removable BIOS Chip (I assume it's BIOS) is labelled
PCI MACH64
113-32103-103
(c) 1995

The ATI chip itself is labelled
TAIWAN
MACH64 215CT22200
uPD96128GD-401-LML
9532EC079
(that "u" is actually the similar looking Greek character whose name
I've forgotten)

A sticker on the back of the card is labelled
P/N 1023210220 505281
S/N WU 5 43 02283
Made in Taiwan

The card has got three jumpers, which I haven't touched:
Jumper 2, 25 pins, which resembles a serial socket, is unused.
Jumper 4, two pins, ENA INT, is open.
Jumper 7, three pins, REL I/O, is closed on DIS (I don't know whether
its pins
1 and 2 or pin 2 and 3, since the pins aren't numbered). The labels DIS
and EN are not immediately next to the jumper, so may be nothing to do
with it - but there is no obvious alternative.

what sort of mach 64 is it? send me the vgainfo.txt
file that now resides on your boot floppy.
it's possible the card is too old, but that would
surprise me, as i've tried a huge number of different
old mach 64's without problems.

Hi,

I'm new to Plan 9, so no doubt am making some extremely silly mistake
which is preventing me from getting going. I'm trying to install it on a
machine with a 1995 ATI Mach 64 but the installation process is failing
by what I can only describe as an attack of alien writing, or at least
my perceptions of how 1970s Hollywood would represent alien writing. My
understanding, from the documentation, is that the ATI Mach 64 should
work.

The installation process seems to run OK until the launch of the window
manager - not very far, in other words. The driver seem to recognise the
card, but it is clearly incorrect, because I get some very pretty lines
of dots and dashes and moving bits, but no romaji.

I've tried removing some - or even most - of the entries for ATI Mach 64
on the boot disk in VGADB, to no avail. I've tried lying about my
monitor - claiming it is a vga 640x480x8, and others - in the .INI file,
again to no avail (and, anyway, I don't think its a monitor problem).

Does anyone know of any other settings I can try? Any suggestions? Or do
I need to bite the wallet and buy a new card (eeek).
