[9fans] smtpd no longer running?

Hi everyone
So, my Plan 9 server had been up for quite a while, but it eventually
became necessary to reboot it. However, after doing so, it seems that
I am not able to receive mail any more. 'ps' doesn't show any instance
of smtpd... any ideas what's going on?

listen(8) starts it up.  do you have handler script in your service dir?

/rc/bin/service/tcp25 contains the following:

Now, after a replica/pull update and a reboot, it seems that the
fileserver part is no longer accessible, either. I installed Plan 9 on
this machine several months ago using a CD that was rather older. Have
there been any updates which might have broken something?
I can still connect with drawterm, if there's anything I should check.

Well, yesterday I wasn't able to mount fossil remotely using "9fs
csplan9" or boot my terminal from that root. This morning, I checked
and saw that RIT apparently changed my IP address, which isn't
supposed to happen but did anyway. After I realized that, I was able
to mount fossil.
Still not receiving mail, though.

that's not enough information. might want to start here:

cpu% telnet net!csplan9.rit.edu!smtp

500 5.5.1 illegal command or bad syntax
cpu%

if you want somebody to walk you through it, you might want to try
#plan9 irc.  it probably works better for the
remote-robot-iterative-debugging method; i'm not being sarcastic.

okay, I'll try #plan9, but one more question--is there any reason that
deleting /sys/log/smtpd would break something? The file was getting
pretty big, so I deleted it. I know that on Unix, deleting a log file
shouldn't hurt anything, but Plan 9 is not Unix ;)

no.  that shouldn't do anything except shunt log information to /dev/null.
if you are using either venti or ken's fs, this won't save you any space as the
old log file is already in an arena (or in the dump).

i cron a C program^W^Wscript to clean up the logs once a month so they
are kept manageable. i don't care if i miss a few minutes' worth:

syslog man implies that the file has to be there.

doesn't fossil pay attention to DMTMP bit?

Well, part of the problem was that I had /sys/log/smtpd set mode 664
instead of 666. I changed that, and now I'm seeing the following in my
log file:
csplan9 Jun 20 14:41:51 helo from 130.203.4.6 as mail.cse.psu.edu
csplan9 Jun 20 14:41:51 [mail.cse.psu.edu/130.203.4.6]
cse.psu.edu!9fans-bounces+john=csplan9.rit.edu -> csplan9.rit.edu!john
sendercheck: error

Shed any light on the matter?

Thanks to John-Galt on #plan9, I found out that it's also necessary to
have /sys/log/smtpd.mx, because the validatesender script apparently
doesn't have the cojones to create its own.
Anyway, /sys/log may end up getting the temporary flag, because
although the logs are useful, I don't see any reason to preserve a
bunch of mail logs for all posterity.

don't forget that all the log files in /sys/log
should have the append flag to prevent races when
updating them (chmod +a /sys/log/*)

we haven't deleted any log files since 2004 and yet the largest
is 1GB.  all told, the log files eat < 1% of our total space and
every so often somebody wants to know something that only the
log files can answer.

it seems false economy.  disk space is generally not a scarce resource.
