Situation so far:
booted plan9 from floppy distribution on IDE disk
mount u9fs file server with CD distribution installed
	bind -b /n/skaro/386/bin /bin
	bind -b /n/skaro/rc/bin /bin
	bind -b /n/skaro/sys /sys
which gives me a system with a reasonably complete set of commands.
(havn't managed to boot direct to the u9fs server, or get other
 than a cga display)

Now when I enter
	cpu% man time
I end up with a continuous stream of:
stack: }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F }F !

Any ideas on what might couse this? I could not find a way to abort
this. Neither ^c, nor 'kill man|rc' from another terminal would help.

P.S. what commands are available for checking on disk free space?
Also, is there any way to enquire about the current name space bindings,
similar to typing 'mount' in Unix?

486SX's do not have FPU's. The 8086, 80286, and 80386 all were made
without an FPU. You had to buy a seperate 8087, 80287, or 80387 for
that, respectively.

The 80486SX was also FPU-less, and requires an 80487 for FPU support.
The 80486DX, and all later x86 Intel processors have built-in FPU's. As
a point of interest, I remember hearing (back in the day, when 486's
were hot) that Intel did not manufacture the SX and DX versions of the
486 differently. All 486's were manufactured with an FPU unit. The
ones to be encased in ceramic marked "SX" had a small wire cut in them
to disable the perfectly usable FPU unit, and the DX ones were left
alone. But SX's were marketed at a cheaper price. Go figure...

Ah, that has the right sort of ring to it.
The machine is an old DECpc 425sx, which has a 486sz processor.

It is a long time since I worried about co-processor stuff, and
I was sort of thinking along the lines of 486s having FP build
in. Could it be that the low cost SX version was without it?

I did, incidentally, manage to get my old Sun SS2 to boot off the
same file server, and the man/troff stuff works fine.

In any case, whatever the deficiency in the PC, the system isn't
handling it very elegantly.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Regards,
DigbyT
