years ago there were a few bits of code that need to be adjusted slightly to
use unicode characters when i tried to use +U'03B1'.
that machine had to be returned, so i stopped.

i did a complete compiler suite for the university release(s) of Plan 9.
it would have needed a few changes to make it compatible with
the published CD's compilers, but by then the reason for the compiler
had gone away. i had a port to a computer based on the Clipper
chip but not an Intergraph machine, so there would still have been
work to do to port to that. i don't think i've got either compiler
or kernel code any longer.

in practice, you don't usually have to remember anything, or even think much:
you type mk and let it go to it, applying the lot if necessary.
all the details are encapsulated inside.

It's ironic that an OS which generally eschews icons uses irrelvent
ones so intensively in the most popular program! I'd much rather type
(and remember) cc.hobbit than cz. If you've got the right single
letter icon, as with alpha, you might as well use it!

That's why it should be "hobbit". Or maybe the chinese glyph for that,
if you insist on scrunching it down to one character.

in addition there's
	4	mips2 (deprecated, i think)
	7	alpha
9	29000 (unused for some time)
	z	hobbit (deprecated)

there was talk of using α for alpha just to see how
far that could be pushed.

ColdFire would be useful (as long as it lasts), but
5[cal] is already in use for the arm architecture

i recall the following

0	spim
1	68010 [perhaps more precisely dragonball]
2	68020	[inc 68030, 68040]
5	arm
6	960
8	386
k	sparc
q	power
v	mips
x	3210

i forget what the hobbit used.
i used K for the Fairchild/Intergraph Clipper, but that doesn't exist anymore either.

5 is already used for the arm/strongarm.

If not, I'm about to and wonder what would be a good prefix.
The Motorola part number is MCF520x. It could be 5[cal] or f[cal].
Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone have a list of ports with prefixes that are already out there?

Is there a plan 9 port for intergraph clipper hardware??? Some time ago I
could get
an intergraph workstation for free (only pick it up) but I turned it down
when I found
out it only supported CLIX and it's hard to find a compiler for it...
