the current hypothesis is that his cpu server
kernels are hanging because of the portclock
deadlock, and so, presumably, is the kernel
build on the terminal kernel.

the install kernel we're serving does not have
that problem, hence the install goes fine.
but once you reboot you can't last long enough
to compile the fix.

to make a next step easier,
http://plan9.bell-labs.com/~rsc/9pcdisk has
a 9pcdisk kernel you should be able to boot.
more importantly, you should be able to use it
to compile yourself whatever kernels you need.
(but make the change to portclock.c).
