I have a dell Inspiron 7000 too, and Plan 9 runs fine
here including the cdrom (only the sound card is not working).

If you or any other with the same laptop
have problems, send me a mail and I'll try to help.

I first noticed that something was wrong when I tried to install Plan9 on my
Dell Inspiron7k from cdrom. 'cp' kept giving me I/O errors. So I created a
FAT partition on my laptop and copied plan9.gz over from the cdrom to the new
partition using a Linux boot disk. After doing this, Plan9 was able to
install successfully.

Later, I made a cdrom on my linux workstation of several files, including
images and archives, that I wanted to try to bring up on this same laptop. I
was able to mount the cdrom OK to /n/tapefs, and could browse the namespace
(trying to use plan9 terminology here, sorry if I am not using proper
context) without trouble, but if I tried to read data from the cdrom,
especially using the 'cp' command, I would always get errors. Also, I could
not directly open any of the images on the CD with 'page'. The only think
that was done successfully (I think) was using 'gunzip' from my home
directory on a tar.gz archive on the CD, which of course, gunzipped it in my
home directory. Unfortunately, other archives were not so lucky and
prematurely ended.

Using windows and linux to test the cdroms, everything works fine. Note that
this is actually a DVD-ROM drive on the laptop, but I am only using CD-R
media, created with the UNIX cdrecord. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brandon Barker
