We already have ``stable'' and ``testing'' releases.
You get a ``stable'' release by installing, and you get the
``testing'' release by updating from sources. I'm just
wondering how many people out there can't update
from sources (because they don't have network
connectivity when using Plan 9) but want to.

I guess everybody who is sitting behind a firewall with http only going out,
would benefit from having sources CD. Or am I missing something ?

Thanks,
Roman.

even though more and more software systems seem to provide http tunnels
so that their RPC requests can pop up the other side of a firewall
presumably to allow people to get their work done.
(rob's earlier post on `Security' is relevant here.)

Many such people do exist. In my experience more and more organizations are
restricting what ports are accessible to the outside world, in some cases
bringing these down to just HTTP and HTTPS.

I can *currently* get from some parts of our University's network via other
ports, however, in the next six months security changes will mean that SSH is
all that goes out, while HTTP(S) access will be via a proxy service. Staff
with valid research needs can get access to other ports, but people like me
who are dabbling for "self education" will be restricted.

Any thoughts on making Plan9 work nicely with authenticating proxies? on
making replica work over ssh or http? WebDAV?

If you believe the Boddisatvhas, no one exists.

That's exactly right. The question is whether such people exist.

Ok. So I understand that you ask for this:

If anyone in 9fans is using plan 9 without a network,
please send a mail to 9fans with:

"would like sources cd"

in the subject.

We can wait for some time, then grep on 9fans to see if that's needed.
