some would object against posting this, but we're fans -- we like
knowing what others think of our favourite OS:
<paste>
UTF-8 is something that was designed by a bunch of people who wanted
to make it a great gift to the world (or to profit from making more
convoluted software -- hard to tell at this point), and it _competes_
with the status quo. Linux is not a new system that defines the
rules, plan9 is. Plan9 is developed as something that was supposed to
"cure" Unix inconsistency and lack of rules, so it got stuffed with
personal idiosyncrasies of its author. And the result is hardly a
confirmation that those idiosyncrasies resulted in a superior, or even
just more practical system.
</paste>
the full thing, and an interesting discussion on implementing utf-8 in linux:

please, look at it from the light side of things...

utf-8 is a racist kludge! :)

There's another one from the linux's VFS maintainer. I heard he uses(and loves)
P9 too: http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0402.2/0415.html
The whole thread started with people wanting the kernel to reject broken
UTF-8 strings in the file names to make all apps sane wrt. to UTF-8 encoding
(of course the idea was rejected)
