I'd like to have a hack session the wed. morning before IWP9.

What I'd like to propose is a sheeva plugfest. People commit to bringing a plug
and we get them set up to run Plan 9.

Any interest?

ron

Hopefully people will have a few cycles to rehash any such session a
little later on--for those people arriving in Atlanta Wed. morning and
commuting to Athens via the great parking lot known as 75/85.

Should have come up with that before people booked travel. Thursday
night at a pub perhaps?

oh yeah, I assume the first step to hacking these is cracking them open?

Or is there a way via the usb port to get serial console (does not
seem so from block diagram)

yes. the mini-usb connector is, in fact, a reverse rs232-usb device
that puts the internal rs232 console on that external connector on usb.
you can just plug it in to a usb connection on another machine,
configure it as an rs232 device (on usb) and you're talking to the uboot console.
(i think there's another usb device on the same connector that provides jtag.)

the other, standard big usb connector is the device's own USB.
thoughtful.

>I'll try to get an european version here.

the device itself still has a US style plug attached to it.
the only difference is that it comes with one of those power leads
with a figure-8 connector and a plug (UK in my case but presumably euro in yours).
to use that, you need to unscrew the US style plug, and you'll find a figure-8 socket
in there somewhere. in practice, it's just as easy to use a US-(UK|Euro) adapter plug.
the internal power supply handles 120-240. (but i'd check it when you get it, just in case
there's a variant that's 120-only, but i'd be surprised. well, a little surprised.)

There's nothing says we can not hack thursday night as well. I
proposed wed. as I am there at that time and it's an empty slot. By
thursday there may be enough things going on that it's hard to do the
hack time.

Me, I see us sitting in the hotel lobby one evening surrounded by
pitchers and wires and boards and maybe soldering irons. I already
almost got thrown out a nice hotel for doing that sort of thing ...
that's all it takes nowadays I guess.

I have some weird PPC-based IBM devices I'm willing to give away to those
inclined to hack on (hey, it's either this or the trash).

inferno might be a good target too. for those who didn't know, you can
boot inferno on it and use its ethernet (but not much more). the code
is available:

too bad i won't be attending...

no joke. TSA is enforcing the no-nickname policy. if you're
"Robert" and your ticket says "Rob", prepare to be harassed.
