A subsequent mail says that it doesn't work immediately on Linux but
apparently it shouldn't be that hard.

Didn't Plan 9 have a way to mount 6th and 7th edition disk images also?
Was that ever released?

yep, it exists, though the support is not
as extensive that ancientfs.
