Our university in not famous for its good connectivity to the
rest of the internet, but in any case, if no better place is available,
I can host any stuff here, just let me know what to put in our fs.

Of course.

Doesn't expire until December. Who wants to grab it? be. I would, but I
don't really feel like I'm as qualified as others might be. If that

wget --mirror of insultant.net and www.insultant.net produce different
results. The former seems to be a reorganised subset (~3MB) of the
latter, which I'm still fetching, but it's up to 44MB and still going.
I'll sort it out later today. We may want more bandwidth for a
permanent home for www.insultant.net.

because they wouldn't sell him heroin.

I'm sure Boyd did. After all, he went out of his way to re-inforce the
resemblance at every possible opportunity.

Nil nisi bonum and all that, but I think Boyd was fundamentally honest,
and would have realized that 'warts and all' sometimes means the warts
are as big as the all..

I think when he punctured my ego, it was overwhelmingly deserved. I
don't regret the bottle of jack daniels which got me my favour (ultrix
kernel code, ?3 instructions?) nor the abusive emails we traded one
bit:

salty nuts are the best kind.

Strange coincidences abound:
did anyone ever notice Boyd's resemblance to the late Raoul Duke who
died earlier this year?

WBM/archive.org seems to have one snapshot. Those are not always very
complete, though.

When Boyd left The Instruction Set he gave me a ruler inscribed with
the words "Bat Killer"
and a large bat earring (which I still have).

For those who don't recognise the bats reference,
it's from Raoul Duke in Doonesbury who always saw bats when he'd had
too much tequila and coke.

Dave.

I don't have any webspace, but I have a unix-box with wget, so I downloaded
it using the --mirror switch. I personally never trusted this switch that much,
but it looks ok.

This httpd runs on my host, and it is ADSL with ~20 kB/s upload. It is
a dynamic IP, so it is just for the sake if nobody of you has a unix-box
with wget or alike. If anybody could download that and put it somewhere,
thanks.

I knew Boyd (and David Hogan). I'm surprised and saddened by his
death. I mostly saw him at Usenixes and at Bell Labs. I think we
started corresponding after his `BIG BATS!' Usenet posting (reproduced
below; my copy of the message lacks a Message-ID and Google Groups
doesn't find it nor the referenced parent message), though I could be
mistaken; he was certainly visible in other groups, notably
unix-[wlg]izards.

There were some things I never understood about Boyd, such as why he
was happier in France than in Australia.

Perhaps someone can save a copy of the insultant.net web site before
his ISP shuts it down for non-payment? I know software exists to copy
web sites, but I don't have it.

As brucee said in another context, `it made me smile':

Oddly, last night I bought chorizo to make risotto for dinner tonight.
Then today I read this. Red wine and chorizo for me too.

I didn't know boyd well, I hardly knew him at all. Two weeks ago we
briefly/tersely exchanged email on the evils of windows boot files.
I'll miss him.

It's a really sad news to hear. I liked Boyd.
I will have a glass of red and chorizo this evening.

Thats so sad, I liked Boyd, I didn't always agree with
him but I liked the way he would speak his mind.

He will be missed indeed. I think a wake is an
excellent idea and one I believe he would approve of.

Indeed this is sad news. I'm sorry to hear that. My deepest sympathies
are with his family and his friends.

I got the chance to speak with him briefly by phone when brucee was
visiting him in Paris just a short while back. As recently as Friday
July 1st we had exchanged email about meeting in the Bay Area on his
way to Australia. Not time enough to really know him, but I
have a feeling that with boyd, what you saw is what you got.
He will be missed.

This is a damn shame :(.

Boyd was really a great guy from what I knew of him. Only meeting him in
person once and having most of our conversation on IRC, I can't say I
knew him well. I can say that I'm terribly disturbed and saddened to
hear this.

I'll miss him.

How awful. I liked Boyd. He was quite a character....

Boyd was very into military things; he wore cammies and picked up
various military type gadgets. He often chose the names of characters
from war movies as his IRC handles (I remember, `Master Gunnery
Sergeant Hartman', a promotion of the crazy Drill Instructor character
played by R. Lee Ermey in Stanley Kubrick's, `Full Metal Jacket': `I am
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your Senior Drill Instructor...').

When I was still on active duty in the US Marine Corps, Boyd took a
trip to Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. He sent me a stone
he'd picked up from Omaha Beach. I was very touched by the gesture.

I believe Bruce saw him recently and spent some time at his flat.
Despite his bravado, which put people off at times, I think he was
fundamentally a good guy. This is a shame and a big loss.

I'm very sorry to hear this... Boyd and I had a bit of a rough start
chatting on IRC but we were beginning to really hit it off... He gave
me lots of useful advice and I'll not forget the guy ever.

This is a very sad day.

Nemo suggests a wiki page in memoriam: I concur.

Since I'm only a 9fan and not yet a 9user, could someone else maybe
start it up?

I've got a couple of quotes that should go in there:
" 'Your consultants are very direct' " (from the customer to our boss
after Boyd and I had worked on a project together),
"How many schooners did it take to rewrite exec()?" (asked as an
authentication question to ??).

More later.

Dave.

I'm very much in shock. It's hard to believe that a good friend is
gone. Boyd will be sorely missed to say the least. My condolences to
his family.

There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just say it.

Boyd was found dead in his flat in Paris a couple of days ago.

His ex-wife Cath just called me to tell me.

Friends hadn't heard from him for a while, so they called the police
who broke in and found him dead.

Sorry to be so blunt, but, like I said, there's never an easy way to
say this kind of thing.

A wake and memorial will be forthcoming in some form.
