Start the install over. I bet it doesn't happen again.
(Yes, this is a terrible answer. I see what happened
and can't figure out how it did, but I suspect it's
just a really nasty race, and the fact that we haven't
seen it anywhere makes me hope that it's just a
really difficult race to trigger.)

So much for the race idea. We put some code
into the kernel to make sure this can't happen.
I'm about to build a new boot disk and we can
go from there.

Hi

I tried again and got about the same [lines that were different were

Also, what may not have been clear from my earlier mail was that I dual
boot [into the dreaded win98se]. Also, my floppy drive has been acting
up- is there anything here that might represent a hardware failure on
that account?

Hi

I had a working plan9 install, then I was foolish enough to use and try
to maintain [windows update, &c]. Of course, it crashed at one point and
during this 'unexpected behavior' somehow the boot thing got all messed
up. When trying to boot plan9 it complained of 'command or file not
found' [something like that].

So I was going to reinstall, I wanted to update my sources anyway since
they came from the old CD iso. It booted off the floppy, found the
ethernet card and while rio was initializing- BAM! It was over.

Here is what I copied down from the screen:
cpu0: registers for stats 103
FLAGS=10246 TRAP=0 ECODE=8010034D PC=801537FD SS=E1C8 USP=0
  AX 00000000 BX 00000000 CX 00000000 DX 00000000
  SI 8063CAE0 DI 8064E1C8 BP 8063CA60
  CS 0010 DS 0008 ES 0008 FS 001B GS 001B
  CR0 80010039 CR2 00002dfa CR3 01423000 CR4 00000010
  ur 8063cad4 up 802d0c48
panic: divide error
ktrace /kernel/path 80106720 8063c8e8

Any suggestions?
