Dave, my direct email to you bounced.

Boyd isn't here to defend himself, but I think he would have been ok
with me calling myself a friend.

Maybe I'm saying the wrong thing, but has Laura Crighton (I hope my
memory isn't failing me really badly) fallen off this list?

And me. I had been chatting with him online for over a year and a
half. Very sad to know he's gone. I won't forget him.

Please add me to the list, too. I met Boyd at the twente9con a few days
before last year's christmas. He was very helpful and made us laugh. I
was deeply impressed by his ed(1) skills and for some reason I still
have his business card in my wallet.

Similarly, I would appreciate it if I could be added.

I only knew Boyd on IRC for a few months, but his ties to Basser
certainly made it feel a lot longer.

I know he'll be missed, not only by myself, but also by my colleagues
who knew him from his time here.

After a hiatus and move, I subscribe to this list again,
and this is the first email I get...

I know of boyd, but not personally. I looked around, but
see no details. Can anyone point me to some details?

Please add me to the list.

Ditto, for me too. I think I only ever exchanged a single email
conversation with him, but I'll certainly miss his to-the-point
comments on 9fans.

My thoughts are with him, his family, and his friends.

I've been looking for a certain message from Boyd, which I think says so
much about him. Couldn't find the original, here's a quote from it:

=========
The final solution is to either beef up IP (bad idea) or replace
it with a mutually authenticated, encrypted protocol.

maybe i'll just stick to shooting 9mm 'cos that is a lot easier
on the carpal tunnel (as long as you fire single action).
=========

Edgy punkiness and a genuine concern for users of the Internet, all
wrapped up in one fascinating person. He will be missed.

Please add me to the list.

I did not know Boyd well.

When I first heard the news, I went back through my email reading our
interactions, all through the mailing list. I liked Boyd a lot. I
wish I knew him well.

I don't think he would have considered me a friend. I don't even know
if he would recognize my name on the mailing list. Would I attend his
wake if I were around? I don't know. Would he attend mine? I don't
know there, either.

I do know he'd be welcome at mine, and maybe that's all that matters.

I hope seeing our names on the absent friends list lets his friends
and family know that in some way he made an impression on us. And I
will miss him.

Please add my name to the list.

-Jack

Yeah, my Dad was found in about the same way as Boyd back in 2000. I
had the unhappy job of calling all his friends up in his address book
and telling them the news. It was hard, I had to take a lot of breaks
and such.

However when the time came for the funeral I was very honestly touched
by the number of people who travelled to come out and pay respects to
my dad and our family. Some of these people I knew from a very young
age and had almost forgotten. Many of them I never knew at all.
Still for a guy who felt so lonely, and he did, he really wasn't that
alone at all.

It's a good reminder for the rest of us I suppose.

Dave

I can't say it better than Jack Johnson and others have, but I'll also
miss Boyd, even though I never got to know him. 9fans won't be the
same.

so if you want on the list, tell me before then!

Also, I've tried not to omit anyone accidentally,
but if I have, please tell me and I'll correct it.

i tried to reply privately, but ...

not from work:

>>Thu Jul 21 14:12:39 BST 2005 connect to net!anvil.com:
>>450 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [213.146.155.10]

silly system. as if one routinely controls reverse IP lookup these days.

not from home:

Thu Jul 21 14:06:07 BST 2005 connect to net!anvil.com:
554 Service unavailable; Client host [80.0.45.142] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net; Dynamic IP Addresses See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?80.0.45.142

stupid dnsbl.sorbs.net
idiots.

anyhow, i thought at first i might attend but it's hard to arrange.
please add me to the list.
thanks.

Here is a request to this newsgroup:
In memoriam of Boyd can we dedicate all messages
for the week of July 24 to him?
If we agree, Dave can relay it during the wake.
For all we know, Boyd may just get up and say bollocks.

thanks
balaji

i think that's a bit diana-ish for boyd, to judge from previous postings.
i'd have thought it would be more the style (say) to
have two minutes of ... firing using artillery of choice.

I realise this is rather late, but is there any where a card could be
sent? I wouldn't dare ask my name to be added to anything (especially
since my knowledge of Boyd came through a website, not Boyd himself),
but I would like to send my condolences to his family & friends. If
this is at all possible, could someone drop me a note?

In possibility the eternal, rightly understood, continually lays out
only a small piece at a time
In possibility the eternal is continually near enough to be at hand
and yet far enough away to keep man advancing towards the
eternal, on the way, in forward movement. In this way the ternal lures
and draws a person, in the possible, from craddle to grave
if he just chooses to hope

Gorka,
Sorry, you missed me:
I had to leave early to be sure of getting my train because of bombs
and stuff.

However, we are putting together a book for the family:
I will make sure that your name is in there.

Cheers,
     Dave.
