I made the changes to /sys/src/9/pc/uarti8250.c specified by jmk:

diff uarti8250.c_orig uarti8250.c 
498a499
> 		case Irls:		/* Receiver Line Status */
and mk'd and installed a  9pcdisk.
As a test I downloaded 2.7MB which with the old 9pcdisk probably would have resulted in "wierd interrupt 0xc6". With the modified 9pcdisk there were no weird...
