Hi everybody.
I have an old NEC laptop kicking around that I am *considering* as a Plan 9
machine. However, it has absolutely no built-in networking devices. What is
the status of Plan 9 with regards to wifi cards and usb wifi dongles? Would
I be better off trying a card/dongle that provides wired ethernet?
The lappy is a NEC Vectra something, so if anybody has had Plan 9 working on
it, I'd like to know.
Thanks

John

<snip>
It's a NEC Vectra LX. Pentium 2 processor, 32 megs of RAM, 2 gig hard
drive. PCMCIA slot, one USB port. Hope that helps.

Perhaps you mean a Versa LX? - this is the cousin of the Versa SX
which is explicitly supported.

I still have a versa sx though it runs win2k and drawterm these
days for optimum family compatibility...

Probably. I was going on memory.

Anyway, it has been established that the computer is a NEC Versa LX. I
just booted the cd yesterday, and it works quite nicely with the
"versalx" monitor setting. I'll probably install tonight or tomorrow.
However, I still don't have any answers on network options. Anyone who
has had success with PCMCIA wireless cards (especially on a Versa LX),
please reply and tell me what card you used.
Thanks

RE: pcmcia ether on versa sx/lx

I used to use a 3com 3c589 pcmcia card - cheap, 10Mbps, but the connector
is a bit fragile. I now have a Netgear FA411, this is 100Mbps and has an
RJ45 connector in bulge outside the normal slot.

The archives have the details of what you need to put in plan9.ini
to make the fa411 work (forsyth's email as I rembember).
