the problem is that the X11 libraries are required for p9p to be useful.
tcc or icc on x86 machines seem good alternatives to gcc.
(tcc is very fast.)

the X11 libraries are probably not so bad (well, not in that sense), but i
wasn't referring to using ?[acl] for p9p anyway
