sorry, it's a snarfo.
i snarfed the line off the screen to paste into the 9fans
message after i had modified it to try the other recipient
of the mail which bounced.
ar.aichi-u.ac.jp definitely refuses.

Wait, you telnet to the smtp port of 9srv.net and achille tries to
connect you to ar.aichi-u.ac.jp? That seems pretty wrong; I don't
think those two sites have anything to do with each other. I should
note I can connect to both 9srv.net and ar.aichi-u.ac.jp (on the SMTP
port) from my Mac, though ar.aichi-u.ac.jp never gives a 220 banner.
