it's a race in drawterm resulting it no text being shown on terminals.
you can either look back through the archives for others' suggestions
or just resize the window until the text appears. starting acme does
it for me.
you won't get that with vnc, and if you aren't using acme then you
won't miss the cursor repositioning that vnc doesn't implement.
