it was deliberate.

it is not dumped, it is just not specified.
the p9 protocol is much more general than
the unix file system. it would be folly to
specify such actions at the protocol level.
a particular implementation of P9
(say a file system) might choose to implement
it this way, but other implementations,
(say ftpfs) couldnt possibly do it.
