Will plan9 work with flat [LCD] monitors? I think so, but I can't find
anything saying it *is* so.

short answer -- yes...
see /lib/vgadb for a list of supported (explicitly) monitors. i can
verify that it works on at least these monitors:
- sgi flat panel
- ibm laptop monitors (including 1400x1050)
- several low-key viewsonic lcd's
- some crazy dell lcd with dvi input even :)
if you get a geforce[23] card you can even do 1600x1200 at 24bpp

Yes it will, especially if the monitors use the standard analog connectors.
A few digital ones work, but not all. One of the hurdles is the graphics card
manufacturers' reluctance to provide information.
