it's easy to forget iostats(4), tprof and prof -d (see prof(1)).
i was working on some imported software that was claimed
to be lean, clean and mean but in simple tests
had amazingly appalling performance.
thanks to the above i quickly found and fixed enough that
it works sensibly. iostats was particularly useful.
it was reading 800 Mbytes by pointlessly rereading
800 kbytes, and had a bizarre buffer bounds test when
writing that negated the buffering.
