I mounted the X11.iso, ran the /n/dist/setup(? - I'm writing from school
and can't recall the exact command), and all seemed to work.
However, replica/pull /n/dist/X11 exited quietly, doing nothing. The file
that normally has the file list (X11.db ?) is empty.

Any ideas?

I don't know, however, it may be possible.
I'm now troubled in pulling-off the serious bugs of our software,
so, I've not read Steve's port though.
However, the reason why I don't use vns is that point, particularly
for web browsing. If the language encoding is not problem,
I agree vns is the better solution.

Is it any easier with the X port?

I'm pretty sure 'most cases' doesn't include for Japanese
input...

only if they're very old x programs
and don't use any of the recent toolkit
libraries and don't use c++.

like i said, you really don't want it.
it's good as an x server on an 8-bit
display so you can run x programs
on a remote machine and have them
on your screen. but so is vnc.

can this be used to compile and run X programs natively on plan9?

the problem is that in some cases there is no other machine available to run
the vnc server on (or it's too far away, etc)...

In the "outdated software you really don't want" department,
Steve Simon updated the X11 port to compile on the current
system. It's very slow on true-color displays, because it
works with 8-bit images internally.

You really don't want this. But there it is. /n/sources/extra
and the updates page. Thanks to Steve for fighting the most
recent battle with it.

VNC is a much better solution in most cases.

Russ
