Well, it happened.

We got 10(?) people.

Many thanks to the attendees.

Particular thanks go to
Charles for a great talk on dynamic loading.
	Alberto for photographs.
	Matt for networking
	Everyone else for being there!

No thanks at all go to:
Arsenal for having their victory parade on the Sunday
	(my birthday too!).

Right, now to start planning for next year ...

Cheers,
	Dave.

I will upload the photos to an ftp in a few days, i will announce it
to the list when they are ready.

Thanks to you for your work, specially for what seems to be the
greatest range of snacks i have never seen.

It's obviously YA strange man who needs no introduction.

It's only shocking when it's plugged in.
(Boy, that 13A@230V 50Hz sure wakes you up).

Actually, that's my Faraday suit:
it stops my electrifying personality from interfering with adjacent
electronics.

BTW: that picture is a microcosm of the whole event:

Forgot to say Apologies from Martin Atkins,
who couldn't make it but _would_ have been the winner of our
longest-distance traveled award which was
instead snaffled by the Spaniards.

Maybe next year, Martin?:-)

My idea was that it's hierarchical:
	<os><event><location>
thus you can tell if you're interested by a right-to-left parse.
(This assumes some degree of global interest).
e.g.
	9filmcannes
would be some 9fans going to see a film (or films) in Cannes,
whereas
	yukbutkisspoughkeepsie
would be windows weenies going bowling with their boss in Poughkeepsie.

Interestingly, most of the people I've been talking to were
only been thinking of going to Usenix for either social or plan9 reasons,
and have been put off by the outrageous prices.

I think cheap-and-friendly is the way to go:
get a bunch of 9ers together with:
* a network (or Matt and an RJ-45)
* some beer and soft drinks
* some food

If someone has a reasonable sized house and the will to do it,
it could be done there,
otherwise it'll take some cash and a school hall or similar.

Ditto me.
I learned more from talking to people and looking over Charles Forsyth's
shoulder for ~1.5 days than I would have from a week of tutorials.

I keep unashamedly pushing the community aspect of this.
I've never organised anything in my life before,
but I managed it fine _and_ made some new friends and all that stuff.

I had 3 fans I'd never met before staying with me for the weekend:
(they got to do some sightseeing and stuff too),
and I had a great time shooting the breeze with a bunch of people
I'd never met or hadn't seen for 20 years.

>>the clock has now been started. think we can get USeast, US west,

>>

Well, I'll be in NY one way or another sometime this year (he said
ominously).

Deffo. Run with it.
Find 3 9fans in your area and go out for a beer.
You _know_ you've got stuff in common
(even if it's only differing views on vector products).

Cheers,
    Dave.

P.S. I suppose we could do a side event at Unsenix and call it unusenix
or 9ix.
Old farts could swap stories about chronic RK-05 syndrome
(symptoms: asymmetric arm development and a sideways lean),

I have a reasonable sized house near Boston (about 10 miles west off route
117 in Weston).

Wife will be curious what exactly "it" is.

all i know is it would be nice if we do it. in fact, a periodic 9SIG
meeting is also not a bad idea.

i checked up usenix site for the boston conference. personally, i dont
think it would interest me as it is 99% non-plan9. i am keen in learning
more of plan9.

that would be nice. for what plan9 is worth, i think it is only fair to
anticipate this.

Start hassling people to set a date.

A raiding party can rush off to NJ and form a circle of wagons
around jmk at the same time.

Cool.

I'd propose that presentations given at Lunix users groups could be a
good grassroots way to get the word out.

In fact, as far as my LUG goes, I'm pretty sure a place to stay and
transportation to<->from NYC or Boston area to SE Connecticut could be
arranged for a 9'er or few of appropriate experience.

We have some people quite interested in statistics processing, in
particular via clustering/distributed computation which would seem to
fit in well with the 9 way.

We normally meet in a small room at a Pfizer building in New London but
I suppose the draw might be a bit more, so we could arrange a larger
hall with registration.

I would love to see a 9con on the east coast, no matter what the venue

Cheers,

~Jason

I'm willing to host the pictures and the details from each 9con. Just
forward the material you want posted to vthacker@9con. Or, send me the
location of the files and I'll do the rest.

BTW for the folks in Japan, there will be another 9con in the Tokyo
area on 9 July. Once I find a new venue, I'll announce the details to
the group. Please send an email to me if you plan to attend. Thanks in
advance.

<hassle>

Friday June 26 and/or Saturday the 27th would be best for me.

"Free beer" as in "free beer." Harpoon or Smuttynose IPA. Maybe even free
burgers.

A designated outside area will be available for smokers and consumers of
light beer.

Also free: a presentation of the Quiet Enjoyment Infrastructure, of which
Plan 9 / Inferno should be a part.
(See slides at NIST site / PKI Technical Working Group / November meeting)

Anyone likely to attend?

for those that might have been interested, but couldn't be
bothered to look for it, this is at:

	http://csrc.nist.gov/pki/twg/y2003/presentations/twg-03-17.pdf

my immediate reaction to this (though i don't know much
about these things): is a universal PKI actually necessary or desirable?

Sorry, I confused this with another list that for some reason squelches links.

>my immediate reaction to this (though i don't know much
>about these things): is a universal PKI actually necessary or desirable?

I believe (obviously) that a properly designed and implemented universal
PKI is necessary and desirable.

I hasten to add (because one gets eaten alive if one does not) that a
universal PKI or ID-PKI must be accompanied by a very strong privacy
protection mechanism. I believe the privacy protection mechanism that is
part of the Quiet Enjoyment Infrastructure will actually make it possible
to do what P3P et al attempt to do, that is, put us in strong control of
our own personally identifiable information.

Anyway, for the full spiel, come see the show!

There might even be some copies of the book for door prizes!

[Book? What book?]

_Quiet Enjoyment_, due off the presses around mid-month.

So, not only did the English invent public key cryptography, keeping it
secret and leaving the Americans to fumble around trying to get it, but it
turns out they did the same with programmable computers.

I smell a serial patent ambush scheme...

Hang on, what brain power? Does nobody remember this post from a strange man
who needs no introduction?

"You have synapses? I wish I did. My neurons communicate by shouting. It
gets pretty noisy in my head. Some times all six of them are shouting at

I don't know what's going on at Google, but it's obviously something pretty
damned sinister.
