When WorldCom hit the headlines a few weeks ago we were told that
Lucent had very little exposure. $5.8bn of the loss is a non-cash charge
to account for a valuation allowance for deferred tax assets.

company's headcount from 53,000 to 46,000.
The company also reported a $7.91bn loss for the quarter, compared to a
loss of $3.24bn in the same quarter a year ago.
