i am not so sure , maybe it's WinFast 700. anyway , this card is
better than the old one , which cause the boot program to dump the
video memory. is there any chance that this problem is caused by the
configuration files rather than the video card ?

Just to let you know...

I tried the new CD image and it was a success! My old Dell laptop is now a
NetBSD/Plan9 dual-boot. Now I can finally get to thoroughly studying how
Plan9 works.

Thanks again for the help!

Cheers,
James

On the CD, what is the date and size of the file /dist/replica/plan9.log ?

It sounds like you got a CD that was made during the recent
problems with the pull log. I just did a pull and the current
log appears to be okay. Perhaps grabbing a new CD image
will solve the problem.

The data and size of the /dist/replica/plan9.log file is 12/3/2007 and 2107
kb.

Thanks for your help! I'll try a newer CD image.

Greetings,

I'm a total newbie at Plan 9, but from what I've seen so far I am endlessly
intrigued. I would love to make it the native OS on an old Dell laptop, but
have encountered some issues. It works great when I run it live, but when I
try to install to the hard drive, I get the following sequence of events:

--> while copying the files to the drive, I get this message: "Warning:
skipping bad log entry".

--> then when it runs the bootsetup stage, I choose the "Plan9" option, and
it then says "Preparing menu..." and then just returns me to the beginning
of the bootsetup routine. It's like the process becomes stuck in a loop.

--> at this point, I have sometimes tried doing a hard reboot, in which
case the MBR (from my NetBSD partition) comes up and displays Plan9 as the
second option, but when I choose it, the screen goes black and nothing
happens.

Does anyone recognize what's going wrong here? Does it sound like hardware
failure or some BIOS/software issue?

Thank you for your time and attention.

Cheers,
James

Hi,

I'm trying to install Plan9 on an older Pentium III system. I think the
hardware is supported.

If I boot off of the CD, I get "PBS1..." and then it starts accessing
the floppy drive, and sits there.

If I boot off the floppy, with the CD in the CDROM drive, I get to the
"boot from:" prompt. It sees sdD0!cdboot, so I enter
sdD0!cdboot!9pcload.gz, and it starts to boot. The last two messages
that flash by are about my ethernet card being detected, and the amount
of RAM found, and then...the system reboots :(

Any idea what to look at next?

Thanks,
-Frank

Your video card is not compatible with Plan 9.

i wants to install plan 9 on my machine, but it doesn't seem to work.
every time i boot with the istall floppy , i receive the following
lines.

rio: can't open display: initdisplay: /dev/draw/new: no frame buffer
init: rc exit status: rc 14:cpurc 14:rio 54:rio 55:display open

then the % prompt appears instead of the install screen. would
somebody tell me what is the problem and how to handle it ?
