Hi,
I too have noticed somthing like this recently.
Its very rare, but the system load goes up to 100% (I know
stats has an arbitary scale but 100% for 30secs is lots in
anybodys language), then ^T^Tp releases it.
If I wait long enough then sometimes I get a panic,
somthing like "pool: block not allocated - double free?".
I have had 2 temporary freezes and 2 panics in
the last few months; never lost any data :-)
I will write down accurate details next time.

I had a similar experience yesterday when doing
bunzip2 -c backup.tbz | tar xT
onto a fossil file system. I'd originally archived my files from a kfs
system and didn't have the same load issues.
Now aside from bunzip2 putting in a significant load, fossil also
contributed. And of course stats not only showed load at 100%, course
context switching like mad.
