Is there an alternative?  What about supporting ghostscript and spin?
Moving off APE to GNU is hardly an option, although it certainly is
different.  Rewriting a whole lot of useful software because the
original authors were not blessed with the holy knowledge of the Plan 9
development environment is also somewhat counterproductive.

No, I think your efforts were heroic and deserve to be sustained and
even enhanced :-)
