can you rebuild a kernel with DEBUG set to ~0 in sdata.c and use that in
your iso image? i seem to recall that the ide driver has had a long-running
disagreement with vmware.

well, that's annoying. iso9660 should return "file system read only".
i've added "no creates" to the list of messages to recognize as normal
and pushed contrib/nupas (but not 9atom).
